John Hanger’s distinguished career in public service includes serving under four governors of Pennsylvania, including as a Cabinet member, as well as his own candidacy for Governor during which he championed the adoption of a medical marijuana law, building key relationships with patient advocates, lawmakers, and others who were integral to Pennsylvania’s new medical marijuana law. His 32-year career in Pennsylvania state government included service as Governor Wolf’s Secretary of Policy and Planning (after serving on his Transition Team) and as Secretary of Environmental Protection in Governor Rendell’s administration. Secretary Hanger previously served from 1993-98 as Commissioner of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission. From 1986-88, Secretary Hanger served as the Public Advocate for Philadelphia’s approximately 500,000 customers of the municipal gas utility, known as PGW, and the Philadelphia Water Department.
In the private sector, Secretary Hanger has served as Special Counsel at Eckert Seamans, specializing in utility, energy, and environmental matters. From 1998-2008, he was also President of Citizens for Pennsylvania’s Future. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy Studies and History, summa cum laude, from Duke University and a Juris Doctor with honors from the University of Pennsylvania School of Law.
