With 12 years of experience as a plant tissue culture scientist and grow manager/production manager at large-scale commercial nursery/greenhouse operations, Dr. Madhevan Asokan heads CannaPharmacy’s cultivation management team, which emphasizes sustainable practices, Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), and best practices in horticulture. CannaPharmacy is a member of the American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS), and Dr. Asokan is the organizational representative in connection with such activities. He supervises CannaPharmacy’s horticultural experts and master and assistant growers in different states and oversees the deployment of optimal controls with respect to:
- Certified nutrient management plan SOPs
- Fertilizer and additive record retention SOPs
- Growing media SOPs
- Onsite water quality through testing at periodic intervals
- Monitoring, recording, regulating, and automating temperature, humidity, ventilating, and lighting controls
- Integrated pest and pathogen management practices
- Facility-wide sanitation and PPE policies
- Green waste procedures and sustainable practices
Dr. Asokan’s storied career in horticultural and agricultural production began while earning a Bachelor of Science in Plant Science/Botany. He went on to earn a Master of Science in Horticulture from Rutgers University and a Ph.D. in Horticulture from Kansas State University, where he was elected President of the Horticultural Graduate Students’ Association. He has trained in GM Plants synthesis, Pesticides/Fungicides Management, Reviewing P&L/Cash Flow in Horticultural Operations, Measuring and Monitoring of Tasks for the Nursery Industry, and High Performance Team Building for the Nursery Industry.
Dr. Asokan boasts 12 years of horticultural production experience as a hands-on Head Grower Manager, Production Manager, and Operations Manager, having run very large wholesale nursery and greenhouse operations. His experience includes production of all types of commercial nursery plants, plugs, bulbs, bedding plants, annuals, perennials, potted flowering plants, woody ornamentals shrubs, and trees for the nursery industry. He has designed and implemented plant-specific fertilizer programs, pests and disease management programs, PGR applications, irrigation systems, growing media formulations, and plant propagation systems.
From his early work as a researcher with the World Bank exploring plant tissue culture and genetically modifying plants (GM plant synthesis) to his work as Production Manager and Master Grower for horticultural sites spanning hundreds of acres, Dr. Asokan brings substantial experience in production factors as well as quality control, which would be instrumental in the young American cannabis industry where standards are slowly emerging. Further, he has acquired extensive experience in plant tissue culture, genetically modifying plants (GM plant synthesis), greenhouse installations, and designing new nursery operations and garden centers. He has been published 25 times in scientific research publications and has co-authored chapters in two books. Dr. Asokan has also held a Qualified Applicator License (QAL) for fungicides/pesticides from the State of California.
